Empower Your Potential part II

“If it is to be, it’s really up to me.” ~Dennis G. Shaver

As a coach and advocate for people living up to their potential, and beyond, I’ve heard so many people say: I know my potential – I feel it, Dennis! – and yet, I can’t seem to empower myself beyond my current circumstances. What am I doing wrong?

If you feel this way, you can bet that you aren’t alone and that this is not unusual in the slightest! What makes me so sure?

Well, it’s simple, really. None of us is born feeling empowered, and empowerment is something we develop. So, see? You’re doing nothing wrong, you simply have yet to unlock the key of empowerment, which unleashes your potential.

To illustrate, I like to share the story of my own entrepreneurial journey, and you can find a more in-depth version in my new book, The Entrepreneurial Incubator. In a nutshell, growing up on a dairy farm, I learned at an early age how to fix things using, what my father called, MacGyver ingenuity – use what you have to get the job done. When I left home as a young man, I knew that inventing and creating was something I had a solid potential for, but how to empower that potential eluded me. The years that followed contained the experiences I needed to feel empowered, and to thereby fuel my potential:  I learned, I experienced, I tried, I failed, I got up again, I studied, I sought skills, resources, opportunity, and I took action to fuel my own motivation.

The exact recipe for moving you from feeling powerless to feeling empowered will vary from person to person, but common denominators remain:

We are powerless until we feel empowered

Empowerment is a practice that we create by: overcoming roadblocks/anxieties and building self-confidence

Yes, you heard correctly: we are able to create a sense of empowerment by actively pursuing opportunities and experiences which move us past roadblocks and low self-confidence.

Make a decision, solve a problem, learn a new skill, practice taking action towards your dreams, enhance your competence, decode the language of how to motivate yourself and others, and take inventory of the arsenal of skills, assets and talents you bring to the table.

Each of these alone and all of them combined, will work together for you to create a mindset of personal empowerment. Empowerment is a mindset, a state of being, not a skill we are born with. When you invest in the practice of creating empowerment in your life, you invest in unleashing your potential.

The Entrepreneurial Incubator is your guidebook to unlocking potential through empowerment, and is available here < theentrepreneurialincubator.com>.

Onward and upward!
